Micro Motion Coriolis Meter Alternative: SH-CMF Selection Guide

Micro Motion (Emerson) is a widely used Coriolis brand, and many plants standardised on it years ago. When a Micro Motion Coriolis meter has to be replaced, added to a new line, or kept as a spare, some engineers look at other options to shorten lead time or fit a tighter budget.

Silver Automation Instruments offers the SH-CMF Coriolis mass flow meter as an alternative for these applications. This guide shows how to select an equivalent SH-CMF meter by line size, flow range, accuracy, process conditions and outputs, and where it makes more sense to keep the original brand.

coriolis mass flow meter product features

Quick Answer

  • An SH-CMF Coriolis mass flow meter can be selected to match a Micro Motion meter by line size, flow range, accuracy class, temperature, pressure, wetted material and output signals.
  • The SH-CMF suits process monitoring, batching, blending, fuel consumption and spare-meter duty on liquids and gases, subject to correct sizing.
  • Each SH-CMF is supplied as a complete sensor plus transmitter. It is not an OEM Micro Motion part, and the face-to-face length should be checked against your existing installation.
  • Standard delivery is normally 10–12 working days after payment for standard configurations.

Why Engineers Look for a Micro Motion Coriolis Meter Alternative

Micro Motion meters have a strong track record, and there is nothing wrong with staying with them. The reasons we usually hear for looking at an alternative are practical:

  • Lead time. A line is down or a project is waiting, and the quoted delivery for the original meter does not fit the schedule.
  • Non-custody-transfer duty. For internal process monitoring, dosing or batching, the plant may not need the same approval package as a fiscal metering point and wants to manage costs accordingly.
  • Spares and multiple points. A project needs several meters, or the maintenance team wants a spare meter on the shelf for each critical size.
  • Retrofit of older meters. An older sensor or transmitter is no longer convenient to repair, and the team wants a complete new meter.

In each case, the question is the same: what information is needed to select a meter that does the same job?

What to Collect from Your Existing Meter

Before asking for a quotation, collect the following from the nameplate, datasheet or DCS configuration of the current Micro Motion coriolis meter. With this list we can select the SH-CMF size and options in one round.

Line Size and Flow Range Cross-Reference

The table below lists SH-CMF sizes with their nominal flow ranges. Use it to find the SH-CMF size that covers your normal and maximum flow. Correct coriolis meter sizing often means one size smaller than the pipe when the flow is low, so check flow first and pipe size second. This is a cross-reference by size and flow range only; installation length should be checked against your existing meter's datasheet.

Line sizeInch (approx.)SH-CMF modelNominal flow range

If your current meter runs near the bottom of its range most of the time, tell us the actual flow. A smaller sensor, down to the micro low-flow coriolis range below about 200 kg/h, often gives better low-flow performance than matching the old size.

Specifications to Match

Mass flow, density and temperature are measured directly, and volume flow is calculated from mass and density, the same measuring principle used by all coriolis meters.

Real Applications

The examples below come from SH-CMF projects we have supplied. Customer details are removed; process data is shown as received.

FluidLine sizeProcess conditionsWhat mattered
Fluorinated specialty liquids (C4F6, RL-316 type)1/2"–3/4"0.5–100 kg/h, -27 to 10 °C, density about 1600–1800 kg/m³Low flow, high density, low temperature

The five applications above cover the most common reasons buyers choose coriolis in the first place: direct mass measurement, density, and independence from viscosity changes.

Where SH-CMF Fits Well, and Where to Keep the Original

A replacement decision should be honest about both sides.

SH-CMF is a good fit when:

  • the measurement is for process control, dosing, batching, blending or consumption monitoring;
  • you need several meters for a project or spares for maintenance;
  • delivery time is the main constraint;
  • the fluid and conditions are within the options listed above.

Keep the original brand when:

  • the point is a custody transfer or fiscal measurement that requires a specific approval already tied to your existing meter;
  • the site standard or the end client's vendor list allows only one brand;
  • your system depends on the original manufacturer's diagnostic software or a specific integration you do not want to change.

If you are not sure which side your application falls on, send the details and we will tell you plainly.

Installation Notes When Swapping

  1. Check the face-to-face length. If the SH-CMF length differs from your current meter, a spool piece or adapter can make up the difference. Send your existing dimensions and we will confirm.
  2. Keep the same orientation rules. For liquids, mount so the tubes stay full; for gases, avoid liquid pockets. Follow the SH-CMF manual for the selected size.
  3. Support the pipe, not the meter. Use pipe supports on both sides to keep stress off the sensor.
  4. Zero the meter after installation. Fill the meter with process fluid at operating conditions, stop the flow completely and run the zero procedure.
  5. Re-create the output setup. Set the same flow units, 4-20 mA range, pulse scaling and communication address as the old meter so the DCS or PLC needs no change.

How to Get a Quotation

SH-CMF Coriolis Meters FAQ

Questions about density, gas service, hazardous areas and outputs are answered in the SH-CMF FAQ. The questions below are specific to replacing a Micro Motion meter.

FAQS

Is the SH-CMF a direct drop-in replacement for a Micro Motion CMF sensor?
An SH-CMF can be selected to the same line size, flow range and outputs, but the SH-CMF is not an OEM Micro Motion part and installation length may differ. We confirm dimensions before you order.
Can I keep my existing Micro Motion transmitter with an SH-CMF sensor?
No. Each SH-CMF sensor is calibrated together with its own transmitter and supplied as a matched set. Mixing a sensor and transmitter from different manufacturers is not supported.
What if the face-to-face length is different from my current meter?
Send the existing dimensions. In most cases a spool piece solves it; for a few sizes we can discuss custom connection lengths.
Can you match my current output setup?
Yes. Tell us the flow units, 4-20 mA range, pulse value and whether you use HART, RS485/Modbus or Profibus PA, and we set the meter before shipment.
Can an SH-CMF be used for custody transfer?
If your application needs a specific custody-transfer approval, tell us which one before ordering so we can confirm whether it can be provided. For internal process measurement no special approval is needed.
My current meter is oversized. Should I choose the same line size?
Not necessarily. Selecting by actual flow often allows a smaller sensor, which improves low-flow performance and can reduce cost. Send your normal and minimum flow and we will recommend the size.
