A magnetostrictive level transmitter is a contact level instrument that measures liquid level by timing a pulse between the transmitter head and a magnetic float. It is also known as a magnetostrictive level sensor or magnetostrictive level gauge. With millimeter-level accuracy, it is one of the most precise technologies for tank gauging. The CZ80 series from Silver Automation Instruments measures level, oil-water interface and up to 5 temperature points from one probe, with ±0.5 mm accuracy.

How a Magnetostrictive Level Transmitter Works

Inside the stainless steel probe runs a special wire called a waveguide. Around the probe sits a float with permanent magnets in it, and that float simply rides on the liquid surface.

Every measurement starts with a short current pulse sent down the waveguide by the electronics. As the pulse passes the float, its magnetic field meets the field of the float magnets. This twists the wire slightly at that exact spot and sends a small strain pulse back up to the head, where a sensing coil picks it up.

In short, a magnetostrictive level transmitter measures level by timing that return pulse. The pulse always travels at the same speed, so the delay converts directly into float position, which is the liquid level.

For interface measurement, a second float is added. It is heavier than the top liquid but lighter than the bottom one, so it settles at the boundary, for example where oil sits on water.

CZ80 Magnetostrictive Level Sensor Models

Which model fits depends on your tank. The CZ80 magnetostrictive level sensor comes in six versions, from standard storage tanks to high-pressure vessels, deep tanks and retrofits on magnetic level gauges already in service.

Magnetostrictive vs Radar vs Ultrasonic Level Transmitter

Magnetostrictive, radar and ultrasonic level transmitters all give continuous level, but they suit different jobs. Pick magnetostrictive for millimeter accuracy and interface measurement in clean liquids. Pick a radar level transmitter when the medium is sticky, crystallizes or carries solids.

Applications of Magnetostrictive Level Gauges

You will find magnetostrictive level gauges wherever accurate inventory or a clean interface reading matters:

  • Petroleum and chemical raw material storage tanks
  • Fuel tank level monitoring at tank farms and in underground tanks at filling stations
  • Oil-water interface level measurement in separators and storage tanks
  • Process tanks in pharmaceutical, biochemical, food and beverage plants
  • Water level monitoring at dams and reservoirs
  • Wastewater treatment

FAQ

What is a magnetostrictive level transmitter used for?
A magnetostrictive level transmitter is used for high-accuracy liquid level, interface and temperature measurement in tanks. Common examples are fuel tanks at filling stations, tank farms, chemical storage tanks and oil-water separators.
What is the accuracy of a magnetostrictive level transmitter?
The CZ80 magnetostrictive level transmitter is accurate to ±0.5 mm on rigid rod models, with 0.1 mm resolution with 0.1 mm resolution. The CZ-85 flexible cable model holds ±(0.01% FS + 1) mm over lengths up to 20 m. With repeatability better than ±0.002% FS, readings stay consistent day after day, which is why many sites use magnetostrictive level gauges for tank inventory and fuel tank gauging.
How long can a magnetostrictive level probe be?
A rigid rod magnetostrictive probe on the CZ80 series covers 150 to 6000 mm. For deeper tanks, the CZ-85 flexible cable probe reaches up to 20 m and can be coiled for shipping.
Can a magnetostrictive level transmitter measure both level and interface?
Yes, a magnetostrictive level transmitter can measure level and interface at the same time using two floats on one probe. The top float follows the surface, while the second one settles at the boundary between the two liquids. CZ-82, CZ-83, CZ-84 and CZ-85 all support this. Choose RS-485 output and you get 1 to 5 point temperature as well.
What information do you need for a quotation?
For an accurate quotation, we need six details. Tell us the medium and its density, the tank pressure and maximum temperature, the installation height from flange to tank bottom, the process connection and the output you want. For interface measurement, please add the density of both liquids.

Silver Automation Instruments CZ80 magnetostrictive level transmitter measures level to ±0.5 mm, plus interface and up to five temperature points, from a single probe. It works in fuel depots, chemical storage and process vessels, hazardous areas included. Send us your tank details and our engineers will suggest the right model and probe length.
