How Ultrasonic Level Sensors Work ?

Ultrasonic level sensor is the fastest growing instrument in non-contact level measurement. Ultrasonic level transducer works based on the principle that ultrasonic waves are reflected on the surface of the object to be measured, and the principle that the measured distance is a function of time.

Since the speed (v) at which ultrasound travels through a specific medium is known (e.g., in air, it is affected by temperature, but this is usually compensated for), the distance (D) from the sensor to the liquid surface can be calculated by measuring the total round-trip time (T) of the ultrasonic pulse. The calculation formula is:

D = (v × T) / 2

Where:

  • D: Distance from the sensor to the liquid surface
  • v: Speed of ultrasound in the medium
  • T: Total round-trip time of the ultrasonic pulse

Once the distance (D) is determined, the liquid level height (L) can be easily calculated using the known installation distance (H) from the sensor to the bottom of the tank:

Ultrasonic level transmitters typically include a microprocessor and signal processing unit.

This unit amplifies, filters, and identifies the weak received echo signal to precisely determine the echo's arrival time.

The instrument also performs temperature compensation and other processing to enhance measurement accuracy and stability.
