Sanitary Positive Displacement Flow Meter

Sanitary Positive Displacement Flow Meter

What is sanitary positive displacement flow meter?

A sanitary positive displacement flow meter is a type of flow meter designed specifically for use in sanitary or hygienic applications, such as the food and beverage industry, pharmaceutical industry, or biotechnology industry. It is used to measure the flow rate of liquids, typically in processes where hygiene and cleanliness are of utmost importance, such as milk flow meter, honey flow meter, molasses flow meter, edible oil flowmeter, water flow meter, cooked vegetable oil flowmeter, palm oil flowmeter, sunflower oil flowmeter .etc.
Positive displacement flow meters can measure high viscosity liquids, such as honey, molasses, etc.,high viscosity liquid cannot be measured by liquid turbine flow meter  and electromagnetic flow meters. Compared to Coriolis mass flow meters,PD flow meters are also much cheaper and affordable for many customers.

How does PD flow meter?

Positive displacement flow meters operate on the principle of measuring fluid flow by trapping and measuring discrete volumes of fluid. They consist of a chamber or cavity that alternately fills and empties as the fluid flows through the meter. This displacement of fluid is then used to determine the flow rate. Oval gear flow meter is normal used positive displacement flow meter.

How do positive displacement flow meters achieve sanitary and hygienic demand?

In the case of a sanitary positive displacement flow meter, it is designed with materials and construction methods that ensure it meets the stringent sanitary requirements of the industries it serves. These flow meters are typically made of high-quality stainless steel 304 ,316 or 316L materials, and they feature smooth and polished surfaces to prevent the buildup of bacteria or contaminants.
Sanitary positive displacement flow meters often incorporate features such as CIP (Clean-in-Place) and SIP (Sterilize-in-Place) capabilities, which allow for easy cleaning and sterilization without the need for disassembly. They may also include sanitary fittings and connections, such as tri-clamp or aseptic flange connections, to ensure hygienic installation and maintenance.

Technical Specifications of sanitary positive displacement flow meter

The technical specifications for positive displacement flow meters can vary depending on the specific type and model of the flow meter. However, here are some common technical specifications you might find for positive displacement flow meters:
  • Positive displacement flow meters have multiple sensor sizes and are commonly used sanitary PD flow meters are 1/2”, 1 inch, 3/4 inch, 2 inch sanitary PD flow meter, 2.5” , 3” or DN80, 4 inch or DN100mm
  • Flow Range: Sanitary Positive displacement flow meters can typically measure a wide range of flow rates, from very low to high flow rates. The flow range is usually specified in terms of minimum and maximum flow rates that the meter can accurately measure, for example,3/4” PD flow meter can measure 300-3000 LPH, 1” sanitary oval gear flow meter can measure 0.6-6 m3/h, 2 inch PD flow meter can measure liquid 10-100 GPM,etc
  • Accuracy: Positive displacement flow meters are known for their high accuracy in measuring flow rates. The accuracy is usually expressed as a percentage of the measured value or as a percentage of the full-scale reading. For example, an accuracy of ±0.5% of reading or ±0.2% of full scale.
  • Repeatability: Repeatability refers to the ability of the flow meter to provide consistent measurements for repeated flow conditions. It is usually specified as a percentage of the measured value or a percentage of the full-scale reading, similar to accuracy.
  • Pressure Rating: Sanitary Positive displacement flow meters are designed to withstand 10 bar pressure ranges, due to tri-clamp or tri-clover PD flow meter can only max bear 1Mpa pressure rating.
  • Temperature Range: The temperature range indicates the minimum and maximum temperatures at which the sanitary PD flow meter can operate effectively. It is important to consider the temperature range to ensure the flow meter can handle the temperature of the fluid being measured, PD flow meter max bear 150°C
  • Viscosity Range: Positive displacement flow meters can handle a wide range of fluid viscosities. The viscosity range specification indicates the minimum and maximum viscosities at which the flow meter can provide accurate measurements. It is often expressed in units such as centipoise (cP) or centistokes (cSt), hygienic Oval gear flow meter max bear 2000 cp viscosity range.
  • Output Signal: Sanitary Positive displacement flow meters can be total mechanical flow meter or can provide various output signals to transmit flow data to control systems or display devices. Common output signals include analog signals (4-20mA), pulse outputs, or digital communication protocols (such as Modbus or HART).

Conclusion

Sanitary positive displacement flow meters are commonly used in applications where accurate measurement of fluid flow is crucial, such as in the dosing of ingredients, monitoring the flow of process liquids, or controlling the flow rate during production. They provide precise and reliable flow measurement while maintaining the necessary sanitary conditions required by the industry.
It's worth noting that there are different types of positive displacement flow meters, such as piston meters, oval gear meters, or rotary vane meters, and the specific design may vary depending on the manufacturer and application requirements.
