What is flow meter for oil measurement?

Positive displacement flow meters are ideal type flow meter for oil measurement. It has high accuracy and reliable measurement performance; we also call it PD flow meters. Mechanical PD flowmeters for oil measurement generally do not display the oil instantaneous flow rate; it only shows the total flow. In order to obtain the oil instant flow rate, additional oil transmitters and electronic display are required.
The positive displacement meter for oil measurement can be traced back to the 18th century. In the 1930s, it was widely used in commercial applications. In principle, PD flow meter for oil measurement is an engine that absorbs a small amount of energy from the flowing fluid. This energy is used to overcome the frictional force of the flow detection element and the rotation of the accessories, and at the same time form a pressure drop at the inflow and outflow ends of the oil flow sensor.
A positive displacement flow meter is a cumulative flow meter that can record the total amount of oil flowing in a period of time. When the oil flows through the flowmeter, the internal mechanical moving parts divide the oil into a single known volume of revolution under the action of hydrodynamics, and are filled and emptied repeatedly. The number of cycles is recorded by mechanical or electronic measurement technology to obtain the oil totalized flow.

How does it work for oil measurement flow meters?

There is a measuring space with a certain volume inside the positive displacement oil flowmeter, which is composed of the moving parts in the flowmeter and its casing. When oil flows through the flowmeter, a pressure difference (pressure loss) is generated between the inlet and outlet of the flowmeter. Under the action of this pressure difference, the moving parts in the flowmeter are continuously moved (rotated or moved), and the The oil fills the metered space again and again, and the volume of the space is obtained in advance from the inlet to the outlet, and the number of motions of the moving parts is measured, so as to obtain the volume flow of the oil flowing through the space.
How does it work for oil measurement flow meters?
Oval gear flowmeter is a typical positive displacement flowmeter for measuring oil volume. Because of its accurate measurement, stable operation and low price, many oils are measured by oval meter. The oval gear flowmeter is mainly composed of housing, a pair of oval gears, a sealing mechanism, an adjustment mechanism, a counter and a signal transmitter.

  • Positive displacement flowmeter has strong vitality and is prosperous for oil measurement for a long time. Its work features are as follows:
  • (1) The metering accuracy of positive displacement flowmeter instruments is high; its indication error can be controlled within ±0.5%.
  • (2) The measurement result of a positive displacement flow meter is the total amount of oil, or the cumulative amount of the oil to be measured.
  • (3) The positive displacement oil flowmeter is very insensitive to changes in the flow field and has strong adaptability.
  • (4) The working anti-interference ability of positive displacement flowmeter is strong.
  • (5) Oval gear flowmeter can be used for the measurement of high-viscosity oil, viscous oil such as heavy oil, with a wide rangibility, generally 5:1~10:1, and special ones can reach 30:1 or more
  • (6) This oil metering device can read the flow directly without external power supply, the operation is convenient
  • (6) It can also be made into electronic flow meter for oil measurement, it can show flow rate m3/h, and also have pulse or 4-20mA output;

Disadvantages of oval gear flow meter for oil measurement

  • (I) The flow sensor has large volume, and heavy, especially the flowmeter with larger diameter, which is bulky, and is only suitable for small and medium size; current normal oil flow sensors sizes are 1/2”, 10mm, 3/4”,1 inch, DN25, DN32, DN50,2 inch, 3 inch, 4 inch, 6 inch, 8 inches oil flow meters;
  • (2) Not suitable for very high and low temperature oils, because parts thermally expand and deform at high temperatures, and materials become brittle at low temperatures. The usable temperature range is -20℃~+I 200℃, and the maximum pressure is 1450 psig.
  • (3) The oval gear flowmeter is only suitable for clean oil without impurities. If the fluid contains particles or dirt, a filter should be installed upstream, which will increase pressure loss and increase maintenance. If measuring liquids containing gas, a gas separator should be installed.
  • (4) The safety performance is poor during the measurement. If the measuring element is stuck in motion, the fluid cannot pass through.
  • (5) During the measurement process, the flow of oil brings pulsation, and the large-size flowmeter will also produce noise, and even cause the pipeline to vibrate.
